[Review] Extreme Tux Racer (PC)
Sublime open source sliding.
With my Steam Deck I now technically own a Linux machine, so I thought I should educate myself on one of the many games starring the Linux mascot Tux the penguin. This also gave me the chance to experiment with installing and running non-Steam games from the desktop mode. After some control tinkering this was a success!
Tux Racer started as a three-day student project by Jasmin Patry, who then assembled a team to expand it into a fuller experience. The full open source release in 2000 was followed by an enhanced commercial release in 2002 (kind of an odd choice considering Tux’s status as a mascot for free and open software, but whatever). The latter even got an arcade version! However, the open source version received further updates from the community under the fork Extreme Tux Racer, which is still available in many fine distros and that’s what I played.
Tux Racer is a kind of downhill toboggan game where you slide down various courses as Tux or, in the updated versions, one of his friends. I usually used Trixi the palette swap penguin; she’s pink and wears a bow, which is how you can tell she’s a girl. You can build up a good amount of speed depending on the surface you’re sliding on, there’s a brake for better turning control, and a jump for clearing small gaps or getting more air (there’s also a trick button but I couldn’t get it to work). It feels impressively smooth! There’s flags around to mark the course but they’re merely a suggestion, you have the freedom to chart your own path (within the horizontal confines of the map). The real goal is to make it to the end with a good time while picking up a certain number of herring scattered around.
In the event mode, you only have a few lives to do this over several courses. The initial cup is quite gentle to pass, although getting gold ranks is a good challenge. The next unlocked cup ramps up the difficulty severely, to the point that I was unable to clear it. Yes, I got stuck on the fifth track, when there are 22 overall! Obviously the balancing leaves something to be desired.
Luckily you can play any of the 22 default courses and 22 “extra” courses in Practice mode, without limitation. Here the individual track designers are credited and you can start to see why tracks can be so different, when they were each created by different people. The extras are mostly silly bonuses that stretch the engine and the ideas of track design, and for the most part they’re fun to try out. I just wish the campaign was a little more fair.
From a Windows 95 demo of Winter Race 3D to Ubisoft’s Steep, I have good memories of downhill winter sports games and Tux Racer felt nostalgic when playing it for the first time. I can see why it was popular, it feels and looks impressive for a project from a tiny team in 2000. Not to mention the landscape for freeware games at that point was pretty sparse. Although the upstart startup that created it is long since gone, thanks to the magic of open source Extreme Tux Racer belongs to the people now and I’m glad it’s still around as a little slice of millennial goodness.

would you ever do a kimi antonelli x famous actor movie star reader! who is at the met gala and he is just like in love with her outfit and is complimenting her so much or something like that? even maybe when they do vogue grwms??
𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬 | kimi antonelli × fem!reader
summary | you attend the met gala looking like a goddess, and kimi can't take his eyes off you
warnings | famous!reader, fluff, mild romantic tension, flirting, public attention / media speculation
word count | 0.9 k

🖇 more ka12 🖇 f1 masterlist
The hotel room smells like fresh roses and expensive makeup. You’re seated in front of the lit-up mirror while your stylist finishes the final touches on your hair.
Your lips, painted a deep wine red, curl into a small smile when the Vogue assistant asks if you're ready to film the GRWM for their YouTube channel.
"Been ready since they said 'Met Gala'," you reply with a wink, adjusting your silk robe as the camera crew sets up.
This isn’t your first red carpet, but it feels like the most special one. This year, you’re not just attending, you’re one of the main attractions. Your movie is topping the charts, your name is everywhere: on posters, on blogs, in whispers behind velvet ropes.
And apparently, in the eyes of a certain Italian racing driver.
"We’re rolling in 3, 2..." the director says, and you let out a soft laugh.
The recording begins, and you talk about your dress, a custom Schiaparelli design, deep black with hand-stitched golden details. The sculpted corset gives off armor vibes, while the tulle skirt floats like smoke around your legs. You talk about the inspiration: constellations, baroque art, the kind of goddess who gets dressed to conquer the sky.
You don’t say it aloud, but you're hoping someone out there notices all the details you poured your heart into.
That “someone” shows up two hours later.
The Met Gala is already underway when your car pulls up to the Met steps. The second the door opens, camera flashes explode around you and the crowd screams like a wave crashing over your ears.
"You’ve got this," you whisper to yourself as you adjust your dress and your perfectly practiced expression.
You walk the carpet, you pose, you smile. Everything is routine… until you see him.
Kimi Antonelli. The breakout Formula 1 star. Dressed in a perfectly tailored tux, elegant and effortlessly youthful. He shouldn't be looking at you. But he is. Like you're the only person on that carpet.
As you approach, someone from the event staff tries to guide you away, but Kimi steps forward.
"Can I...?" he asks, his smile shy as he offers his arm.
Your laugh is more genuine than anything you've done tonight.
"You're going to escort me, racer boy?"
"Only if you’ll let me say you look like..." he pauses, glancing at you from head to toe, a bit dazed, "...like a piece of art. Literally. I think time stopped for a second."
Your cheeks heat up slightly. No one’s ever said it quite like that, so direct, so honest.
"That’s a pretty poetic line for someone who drives at 300 km/h," you reply, looping your arm through his. "Are you always this charming?"
Kimi chuckles, soft and genuine.
"Only when someone takes my breath away. And you... you did that the moment you walked in."
You walk beside Kimi as the flashes continue nonstop. Every step with him on your arm becomes a moment worthy of a magazine cover. The cameras aren’t just capturing your dress, they’re capturing the way he looks at you: unapologetically, fully present, as if the rest of the world simply disappeared.
"Did you know I was coming tonight?" you ask under your breath, still smiling for the Vogue Italia photographer.
"They invited me about a month ago," he replies. "But I didn’t know you’d be here. If I had, I would've dressed better."
"Better than this?" you glance at him briefly, taking in his look. "You're flawless."
He smiles, but glances down for a moment, slightly shy. So different from the actors you usually hang around. Younger, yes but also more transparent. Like he’s not trying to impress you… but somehow still doing it.
That’s when an E! News reporter appears with a mic and an excited grin.
"The two of you together! This is unexpected!" she exclaims. "Can we steal a second of your time for the fans?"
You nod politely, and Kimi though a little surprised stays right beside you. The questions are light. They ask about your dress, your movie, your prep for the night. But when the reporter turns to him:
"And you, Kimi? Are you here with our star tonight, or was this a coincidence?"
He doesn’t even hesitate.
"If it was a coincidence, it’s the best one I’ve ever had."
The reporter laughs, you laugh too. But there’s a quiet flutter deep in your chest.
"So drivers don’t just go fast they think fast too?" you tease.
"Only when they’re in danger," he says. "Or when they’ve got a goddess on their arm."
The interview ends with light laughs, but you're not the only one who noticed the exchange. As you turn toward the entrance, you spot a few people whispering. Some fans filming with their phones. The internet is probably eating this up already.
"You did that on purpose?" you ask Kimi, still holding onto his arm.
"Did what?"
"That line. Letting everyone think we’re together."
He gives a small shrug, but his eyes are dead serious.
"I didn’t plan it. But... if the world wants to believe it, I don’t mind."
The silence that follows feels warm. Unexpected.
And then, the doors to the Met close behind you. Classical music spills across marble floors, and golden light gleams off ancient sculptures. Everything glows, but nothing glows quite like the smile he gives you when he leans in and whispers:
"Can I stay with you tonight?"
Your heart skips.
"The whole gala?"
"The whole life, if you let me."

Everybody wants a taste l LN4
a/n: i am in an urgent need of writing ideas I've had for MONTHS so brace yourselves I guess?? also the title ofc is from pop anthem jealous by nick Jonas.
i am also very very very stressed waiting for the standing start.
pairing: Lando Norris x actress!reader
this is angst. and some tom holland after this poll results <3
summary: Lando had never been the jealous kind, but after seeing you with many co-stars, he reaches his limit. and his girlfriend doesn't like it.
No one would ever know Lando Norris' was reaching his limit as he stood on the sidelines of another press junket for his girlfriend's new movie: a coming of age movie that already was creating awards season buzz, and God was he proud of her, having witnessed the ten minute standing ovation she received during Cannes.
But of course the limelight wasn't only on her. No, it was on him.
Lando remembers when he was asked who he'd want to portray him if they ever did a biopic and he didn't hesitate: Tom Holland. There could be some similarities between the two, both British, chestnut curls, but now Lando's skin crawled just from hearing the name.
He had dealt with different co-stars during the almost two years of relationship; he'd seen her kiss them, fight with them, fall in love with them, but this was different, he never had to witness her naked skin pressed against someone else, placing her body on top of his, pretended noises he knew weren't real and authentic, but still, they were supposed to be just for him. All for the sake of making a point of her character being an adult now, some shit about an epiphany of being able to take control of her own life, make decisions about her body, and whatever the screenwriters wanted to portray.
And of course Lando didn't help himself.
user1: God has favorites, just check y/n having fake sex w tom holland and real sex w lando norris
user2: no but y/n and tom??? such a hot couple I NEED it to happen
user3: and what are you gonna do with lando and zendaya? lol user2: idc I just want y/n and tom to be a thing
And that was just the beginning, before the movie had even dropped, because the day of the premiere? Everything went wrong.
Sunny Los Angeles had welcomed you and Lando after landing from London, paparazzi eagerly waiting for the arrival at LAX, catching the perfect pictures of Lando placing you in front of him, holding your hand tightly and doing his best to shield your body from prying eyes who just wanted a couple of dollars.
Despite being jet lagged after spending a couple of days in your home in Monaco, there wasn't much time to catch a break because the moment the two of you set foot on the Beverly Hills Hotel, they barely let you take a shower before giving some nice, fluffy robes. Lando was first, out of nowhere two people were working on his hair while the other was applying some kind of serums and creams on his face, but he didn't care when it was time for another team to start working on you; Lando was mesmerized by the way your hair perfectly framed your face, the natural glow of your skin, the deep red of your lips.
"I don't like being so separated," Lando pouted, walking towards your seat, earning a giggle from you because he looked so funny and cozy with the big robe.
"There's not much we can do, baby. I can barely move," You searched for his eyes and that was when Lando got the idea. The hair stylists gasped when the racer sat down on the floor, circling his arms around one of your legs and resting his cheek on your thigh. "Oh, you're willing to be told off by the make up artists as well?" You asked him but your insides were dancing all over the place, your fingers quickly finding their place on his curls.
Neither of you noticed a Vogue photographer capturing the scene, with Lando's eyes closed and cheek smushed, with his arms secured around your leg, but neither realized representatives for Armani had walked in carrying Lando's tux and your body-hugging black velvet gown.
So far so good. A picture perfect young couple who loved each other very much and had photographers swooning by the way Lando fixes your earring and checks for lipstick on your teeth, and how you make sure his bow tie is leveled.
But then, they get to the red carpet.
It was an elegant affair, but still full of people and before he realized, the red carpet manager was separating you from him for an alone photo call before the one and only Tom Holland got there, cheerfully greeting you in front of the cameras, throwing a couple of jokes to make you laugh as he placed his hand on your back.
This was a nightmare, having to listen to people say how cute the two of you looked, a perfect on and off screen pair, chemistry on and off the screen, both your names already on the shortlist for the Oscars.
Lando's skin was starting to crawl, and it didn't help that he had to re watch the scenes haunting his mind, but this time it was out for the entire world to see, and it didn't take long for his latest instagram post to be flooded of vile comments.
when are you getting replaced by tom holland??
now tom holland can play you in movie and y/n plays herself, nothing changes lmao
lando control ur woman!!!
lucky man, she sounds so pretty I almost had to leave the theatre
lando honey you can leave her I'd never do that to you
And Lando knows he shouldn't, but when your hand reaches for his when the night ends, he pretends to look for his phone; when you try to fix a messy curl, he moves his head out of your reach.
and you know your boyfriend too well.
"Baby, are you okay?" You ask him once you reach the shared hotel room.
Lando lets out a dry chuckle, but too aware of his throat closing. "Why wouldn't I be?"
But you weren't having it, not today, not on your big day, not when you just wanted rest your head on his chest and fall asleep with his arms wrapped around your frame.
"I don't know, you tell me, you're the one acting weird,"
"I am not," Lando argued, trying to take deeper breath, but failing miserably.
"Okay Lando, whatever, I don't care. You can be selfish during a very important day for me for all I care,"
Those words struck a nerve: "Me? Selfish? Are you fucking kidding me?" Now you could see his cheeks flushing, maybe even his neck gaining some red color.
You wanted to be scared, to walk away and let him cool off any unwanted feeling or thought on his head, but you couldn't.
"No, I'm not. Please illustrate me as to what happened to put you in this insufferable mood," You argued back and watched as Lando's mouth opened and closed as he undid the cuffs from his shirt, threw the suit jacket on the leather sofa and threw away the bow tie, all in just a couple of seconds.
"Am I not allowed to be upset to watch him all over you, having to look at the both of you acting like the best of friends or lovers for all I care, and then have to watch on this fucking enormous screen how you kiss him and touch him," Lando spat the words as if they were venom; he could feel his throat closing
Your eyes widened in disbelief, your brain not processing Lando's words. "Lando, you are not making any sense. Are you listening to yourself?" You were careful not to raise your voice, knowing he wasn't in a clear space of mind, but you blood was running hot too after processing what he was implying.
"Yes, I am. (Y/N), baby, I'm tired of having to watch you making out with a different guy every a couple of months, it is so tiring, and I understand that this is your job, but..." Lando was about to continue but was stopped by you, messily taking off the heavy velvet dress and heels, putting on the first pair of jeans and oversized sweater you found. "What are you doing?"
"I don't want to listen to you anymore. You are ridiculous, Lando. You're talking about my job, my career, that I've worked my ass off, and never in a million years I thought you'd be telling me this bullshit! I'm not going to entertain this, so if you can't deal with this anymore, please let me know so that I can move on," this time your throat tightened, the last words coming out broken and choked, emotions fighting to make their way; from anger to utter sadness.
"Where are you going?" Lando didn't know if he was angry with you, disappointed in himself, maybe a mix of both as he watched you grab the Chanel black backpack.
"I don't know, but let me know if you can do this or what,"
You were sure those were the last words of the unforeseen argument, but as you were grabbing the card key of the room, Lando opened his mouth.
"Maybe you can go with Tom, everyone wants you two together anyway."
Of course he needed to get the last words.

Could you do a one shot of MK1 Johnny with a street racer reader?
Johhny Cage x Street Racer Reader

Johnny was in peak of his career, every movie he was in earning award after award. He was practically expected in every action movie of the decade, along with the occasional rom com. So here he is, looking over the long list of films his agent had procured for him to star in. Most had been by the request of their directors, but a few were movies his agent went out of his way to look into.
Being that films took years of work to film and edit, reshoots and last second voice overs, Johnny could only really commit to one, and the occasional small series or backup role. Looking through the list his attention was caught by a high pace action movie where he would star as the lead; an undercover cop trying to crack down on Los Angeles' street racing epidemic, only to be drawn into numerous hijinks.
It seemed like an interesting concept, the script was good, and he did have experience with this studio and director. But the real draw was the warning that was attached with the script.
Due to the risk factor involved in numerous stunts, scenes, as well as for realisms purposes. All cast members will be required to take safety courses as well as in constant supervision of professional consultant at all times.
He was going to be doing his own stunts and working with a real street racer. If that didn't have 'Cage Flick' written all over it in bold he didn't know what did.
He of course got the part, he still questioned why the audition was even necessary.
His first day on set was simple enough, meeting the cast and crew, as well as a few brief investors for the movie. That was until he met you.
You had grown up in LA and gotten into street racing fairly young, so naturally you were the best pick for this job. And the producers were willing to pay a fuck ton to be able to advertise that extra layer of 'authenticity'.
You were an instant hit with the cast, getting along with nearly all of them instantly. Johnny in particular was rather captivated. It was your first time meeting such a high-profile celebrity, even as a born and raised LA resident.
The attraction on Johnny's part was immediate. Confident, hot, and looked damn good in the driver seat.
Throughout shooting, you had coached Johnny on safety guidelines and how to do complex drifts and turns.
That wasn't to say the attraction was one-sided. Hell, you had thirsted over this man with your friends when you binged his movies. So, when you heard the director making fun over him about his less than hidden attraction towards you, you took your chances.
A hand guiding his when instructing him how to use the gear shift, giving him pats on the back when he figured out how to pull off the reversed driving sequence, and being extra sure he was behind you when you decided to bend over to inspect the hood of the car. (there was nothing wrong with it)
Despite what media would have you think, being an actor is a very busy and grueling job. Johnny had wanted to ask you out a number of times, but by the point he had enough courage and confidence that you were also interested, filming had wrapped up.
So here he was, sitting in an Italian tux, surrounded by some of the most talented minds in the filming industry, with an Oscar nomination, wondering where the hell it all went wrong.
"Johnny" he looked to his co-star sitting to his left. Looking down to see the small bound together papers with the word 'draft' on it.
"It's soon, but, by the looks of it.... It's been greenlit" A sequel?
Well, seeing as he was the main lead, it was no doubt they'd need him to come back. And if they did?
He knew the condition he was going to demand if they wanted him.
Maybe he could finally ask you out for that drink.

It's interesting to me how Tux Racer has an arcade cabinet out.. This is an older open source game based on the Linux penguin.. I used to play it on my old PC
from the late 90's!
I wonder if the cabinet runs Linux..
I know all my current cabinets run that or Android 😅

[Review] Steep DLC (PS4)
Chilly jams.
Having played Tux Racer recently (and having seen some impressive ski slopes and ice caves in Switzerland's Eurovision broadcast) I was in the mood for more extreme sports of the cold variety. The deluxe version of Steep was on deep sale so I revisited my old save file from 2021, clearing tricky events I couldn't before, exploring the map more thoroughly, and checking out the DLC offerings.
This time I opted to play as Irish lass Kelly Walsh, dressing her in the more novelty outfits like a glow-in-the-dark skeleton suit, furry yeti costume, cat-themed helmet, etc. Her voiceover wasn't too bad, but my existing complaint about the obnoxious NPC voices still stands. The DLC adds some new characters, especially in the Winterfest pack, who are meant to be larger than life but it came across as trying too hard.
Winterfest's events were at least a change of pace with different kinds of activities to do, along with a dash of silliness. The Extreme pack is the most substantial as it adds new event types: the underwhelming base jump, the underutilised hybrid ski/speed-paragliding, and the unbridled excess of the rocket wings, easily the standout for both exciting flight tasks and expedited map coverage. The X-Games pack on the other hand was a flop, consisting mostly of repeated score runs of the same highly curated trick course.
Sadly one of the DLC packs is no longer available: the PyeongChang Winter Olympics had a tie-in, but the notorious Olympics licence has expired and you can no longer buy this expansion, even though all the hooks and prompts for it are still in the game. You can still travel to the region where there is lots to do outside of the Olympic events, but the vast majority of this area is set in Japan, with the sole South Korean sub-zone existing on the map but you are barred from entering it if the DLC is not owned. This felt like a let-down especially since Japanese culture already gets a lot of representation in video games worldwide, unlike Korea. There are events that retell folk stories, for example, and I think it was a missed opportunity personally to hear stories I didn't already know.
Still, exploring the Japan zone and the Alaska zone (which I had only partially cleared last time) was a lot of fun and each area has some of its own character despite being made up of the same white snow, black rocks, and blue ice; like how the grey trees have different shapes! The bleak beauty of these snowscapes captivated me again, although you have to be careful of the vertiginous upper half of the screen when things get *steep* (title drop).
So yes, Steep is still a nice time, despite the finicky menus and tricky controls. It's better to flow through the game, as hunting down events that you're missing or trying to navigate the progress bars and suggestions can get tedious. And honestly… it's impressive that it all exists in one huge contiguous open world (or three sub-worlds, I guess) but I will once again be a hater of this trend and say that the open world aspect isn't really necessary, and leads to some blandness and filler in the content and presentation. The best parts are the most hand-crafted lines and unique events, and the game will fail you for straying from intended paths during events anyway, so what's the point? Anyway rant over, snowboarding is cool eh?

Microsoft XBOX 360 - James Bond 007 Blood Stone
Title: James Bond 007 Blood Stone / 007 ブラッドストーン
Developer: Bizarre Creations
Publisher: Activision / Square Enix
Release date: 13 January 2011
Catalogue No.: JES1-00120
Genre: Third Person Shooter
Most Bond games plain suck. Let's not deny it. The only good ones are Goldeneye and From Russia with Love (1997 and 2005, respectively). Fortunately, Bond fans have been rewarded for their patience, in the form of 007 Blood Stone. Like an unofficial movie, until the next one comes out, this installment in the series is well worth the wait. Made by the same developer that made the stunning MSR Metropolis Street Racer for Dreamcast. So let me explain why.
Without getting into the details first, I want to say that this game is a really engrossing combination of Hitman Blood Money (2006) and Splinter Cell Conviction (2010), both excellent third-person shooter/stealth titles. While Hitman deals more with 'urban' stealth, S.C.C. is an action-oriented stealth shooter, which takes a few pages from Gears of War (2006). In that regard, if you like any of these games, you're going to love Blood Stone. In the fashion of Hitman, occasionally Bond will masquerade around as a guy in a tux, or a Professor, or a bodyguard, all the while slipping past groups of civilians (that's about it in terms of the Hitman similarities). On the other hand, like Ubisoft's latest Splinter Cell title, you'll have the option of stealing a level (to an extent) or simply running and gunning. In fact, this game is so much like Splinter Cell Conviction, that I wondered if the boys at Bizarre Creations were playing that while creating this game.
